Blonde veneer replacement

A collector is trying to replace a portion of blonde veneer missing, from an RCA-621TS (RCA called this toasted almond, I believe). He tried to use new, unstained mahogany, but he said the grain is wrong.

Does anyone have experience replacing a piece on a blonde finished 40s RCA...and what type veneer he should purchase? Once he does the repair, he'll refinish the whole set.

Thanks! -- Harry
