A rare promotional item from Ampex's ephemeral golden age.

478 is just fine with me. My Otari likes it pretty good in the medium position. Never had a problem reel of it. Nice mug in the superb Ampexian tradition!

I have an Akai GX-267D and Roberts Tube stereo R/R plus huge collection of pre-recorded R/R tapes from 50's + 60's.

I once had that Otari with overhead meter bridge and 2 Tk Rec + 4Tk PB heads - Got it from Lutheran College (should've kept it ?)

Used to work on MCI/Sony APR-5000 analog R/R in late 80's - the model number was 5000 and they cost $5000 (easy to remember)

I love the APR 5000. One of the best analogue machines ever made. Easy to maintain as a rule. Wish they had built many more of them then they did.

The MCI'5000 worked very smoothly but was so complex that it had unacceptable failure rate for then new corporate owners Sony. So Sony did something extraordinary: They made an exact copy/clone of machine in Japan and exported this more reliable (but at what cost?) version. Clever but Insane. They lost boatloads of money of course - as with many of their other professional products.

So when you look at one of these, see if you can tell if it's an Orig or clone (I can tell by looking at the boards)

When cloning the US product:
The boards in the Nippon version of the '5000 used Japanese sourced IC's where ever possible , they only used US IC's when there was no choice.
Proves they are a Merchantilist State (bent on the economic destruction of their 1940's enemy) (like China).

Talking

How dare you spoil a photo of an Ampex product by displaying it on an RCA chassis
