Another RCA CT-100 discovery B8001599

Decided to postpone the chassis alignment and bandpass evaluation while I fixed and refinish the cabinet. Peeling veneer relied and front mortised corners were separating. Glued with lot of long clamps all around to pull it back together.

Cabinet was badly banged up. Hoped not to have to do much sanding but had to fix many deep gouges.

Stained to match original finish. Came out very close to the finish removed. Two spray coats of Watco lacquer on the main cabinet to be lightly flattened and polished. Still to do lid and front wood control panel cover.

Seems to be a province wide shortage of lacquer products in Ontario at the moment. Found a hardware store 30 miles away had two litre tins which I collected on the weekend.

Thanks. There has been a lot of effort into this machine. I want to get the lacquering out of the way while the weather is good.

I finished the cabinet this evening. Two coats of lacquer: first coat, 400 grit wet and dry paper rub down, second coat, 600 grit paper followed by 0000 steel wool. The cabinet looks quite respectable now.

Before I head back to the chassis testing, I have run into a problem with the shadow mask. The black rubber surround seal has melted and amalgamated with the shadow mask. I tested removing a small portion at the corner with alcohol aided with a razor blade. The alcohol dissolves the red-brown paint. I dare not use the razor as it easily scratches the paint.

Any suggestions how to remove the rubber without removing the paint?

This may be a shot in the dark.

With the Motorola 7" VT-71 sets, that gray rubber CRT surround molding will easily be removed with plain water. Have you tried that? The RCA rubber may not be the same rubber type.

But water, in sparse amounts, might work; might not.

The water works! It takes a little soaking but it dissolves the rubber without disturbing the paint!

You mean the face mask or screen mask.

Shadow mask is an internal part of the CRT behind the phosphor screen used to prevent crosstalk between each phosphor and the 2 guns that shouldn't scan that color of phosphor.

That is a funny slip on my part. I should have called it the mask or the CRT surround. I guess I had crts on my brain.

My CT-100 has a black speck on either the CRT surface or the outer protective faceplate. This is a replacement 15GP22 installed a couple of years ago.

I knew about the speck while installing it but didn't want to risk harming the CRT so I never turned it over to get a good look at the face. I tried wiping it and the inner surface of the protective glass but gave up and thought "I can remove
the outer glass after I've turned the set normal side up". But that failed because its stuck.

Has anybody tried unsticking it from the "rubber" that solidifies and holds it to the cabinet? That is, in a very safe way that won't bother the CRT or break the glass?

I dissolved the rubber with water. The rubber was totally rotten on my set and I ended up removing the coil and putting the picture mask in the bathtub to soak and remove all the gunk.

Mine was goo and after removing the brass trim, I slowly was able to pull the outer glass away. But the black goo mess I think can only be properly removed by taking the picture mask out and soaking it in water.

Finishing off the cabinet. Added the lacquer gold paint. The speaker grill cloth was very dirty and will see if it useable. Is there a replacement available?

Anyhow back to the chassis in the next few days.

So do I! I find the posting of photos on the forum reduces resolution. I think the images may be transcoded from the 3MB original to 300kB. Perhaps the answer is to transcode to 300kB prior to posting?

Has anyone else come across this?
