"fall in the correct place?" maybe not the best way to describe but as I adjust a coil the response curve on the scope moves right or left which has the effect of moving the marker up or down

I agree on needing to bring it all together, I will follow up with where I am at in a bit.
Is the vertical input of your scope set to DC? it appears it may be set to AC and the whole curve may be shifting up and down, confusing the measurement of the actual vertical position of things.
