Philco model 22D5102 color
Yes, I really wondered if TV123 chassis easy as ABC? More importantly: How many of these exist and how many are operational/restored?
According to the ETF and myvintagetv.com sites, 500 were made with just 6 known to exist. I can't imagine the Philco dealers having just one color model among many monochrome sets, then no color models for 5 years - The K5411 chassis 12L80 (totally RCA CTC11 in a very non-RCA cabinet). More questions than answers about how these were distributed, sold, given away as prizes, etc. ![]() I am personally aware of two of these grand prizes owned by VK'ers and I just had one of the chassis on a test CRT/yoke in my TV bunker. It sat for a few years in my queue but curiosity and a sudden opportunity to return it just yesterday motivated me to action. Fortunately the yoke/convergence yoke and CRT are from a CTC5. Even still, there are some special connections needed if you have just the chassis. I received the chassis fully-recapped, owner reported no HV and supplied full documentation from the ETF site including a factory training book. This owner was aware of the fly failure and had undertaken some modifications which proved spot-on after this adventure. First, Two 250-ohm 5 watt power resistors provide a dummy load for the purity coil on the CRT (like CTC5 has those magnets). Second, Standard 21" round CRT yoke needs old octal tube pins on leads to plug the yoke leads into that oddball connector Philco used. Third, no need to bypass the convergence board plug to get full vertical sweep. What happened next should prove very helpful to anyone with a cooked flyback that is unobtanium such as Philco # 32-8716-1. Don't bother looking in cross-ref books, Philco did not commit to a line of color TV to point where Merit-Thor-Stancor-Ram and others made replacements for this particular one. More questions than answers about how these were distributed, sold, given away as prizes, etc.” I have found in my research of Admiral, Raytheon, RCA and Westinghouse, sales of these sets were under reported, under the shadow of colossas RCA. Example, Admiral manufactured 1000+ C1617A’s. A Westinghouse H840CK15 Was recently found with chassis #ME001062. The sources that report early color numbers should be updated.

Philcos yoke connector on that set was also used on the predicta and other sets. Years ago I came upon a junk Debutante without a tuner that I modified for AV input and sold. Knowing I had a TV-123 with that connector I robbed the yoke plug and socket off the junk Debutante (that junk Debutante got a standard octal connector in its place) and made a yoke extension cable...
Nothing needed to extend too far since the cabinet can act as it's own test jig if you slide the chassis mount board out far enough to get at what you need. Mine is working well last time I plugged it in.

The fix as discussed in last post
The flyback winding (now open) had turned into a solid conductor, creating a single winding "donut current clamp", disabling the entire stage.
To be sure, I removed the arced to death winding on a CTC20 fly that I had lying round. The CTC20's yoke/damper winding tested poorly on the ring test, H-out and secondary windings were open. When the donut was cut off, preserving the primary windings, the ring tested good with a peak reading on one of the middle ranges. I did the same to the Philco and saw little improvement, so I lifted the ground on the "pulse winding" which was not at the bottom like an RCA fly but wound under the primary windings. This was it! Ring was reading well into the good zone on the second highest range. Prior to this operation, dropped there as if it were a null or trap. Flyback section.JPG

The finishing touches
Adding a standard SS tripler like an ECG 500a or 523 (this was SK-3900 or something) is all you need.
No more HV or focus tubes necessary, maybe some work yet BUT we got 21 kV without 6BK4 connected. The cathode current was about 150 ma, less load on fly its a win-win! The focus tap was pure luck, when I first got HV the focus dialed right in as it was the right value tap on tripler, it was grounded of course. Nice work.
I kinda wonder if Philco over drove the flyback in these...My set I've found I need to run a weak B+ rectifier for the rail that feeds the flyback to get boost down about 50-75V below the spec Sam's quotes...If I don't the cathode current is something like 250mA when supposedly the output tube is only good to 170mA. At the lower B+ voltage cathode current goes down to under max spec, HV is still more than sufficient as is width...and everything else seems to work fine.

Me too, until I reload and one image appeared as a link. THe link prompted the login again, and doing so, I'm able to open the other images... Another VK behaviour to take note

I didn't know Sylvania made color tubes so early, but here's an announcement of their pilot plant in 1954!

Man, would I LOVE to find one of these! Even a later Philco roundy. I had a '66 or '67 years ago. Black metal housing with peg legs. My mentor told me at the time taht they were the last manufacturer that sold a round color set
