I probably shouldn't have, but I did. And I didn't see that brightener until I got it home

I cooked it on the variac/DBT for a while and it came right up with a full raster (dim!) and sound but no color demod. Color control does nada. Horizontal looks iffy but I used a VHS VCR as a source

I'd do a quick purity adjustment then feed it a color bar test pattern from a generator and vary the fine tuning and color level. If the chroma osc is good and the tuner and chroma bandpass circuits are passing color, then you'll get color demodulation and or barber poling if the chroma osc is running, or you'll get a general single color tint to all brightly colored objects if the osc isn't running.

I like to get purity good before messing with color circuits... when I don't I usually end up chasing ghosts in the color circuits because purity is fooling my eye.

Yeah I haven't checked the chroma oscillator yet, just the burst amp tube. I need to get it in the house so I can feed it a good signal (or buy a test pattern generator) I gotta fix the lift gate on my truck before I can get it in the house lol

And the jug is obviously baaaaaked, it's a 21cyp22a, and a rebuild at that. If anyone here wants to sell me a compatible replacement, I'm all ears

Mr. Rye
EM has a good point. Do a set-up on the beast, especially purity
& be sure the focus is near center. It may look OK in a dark room.
Seems to be solid so worth finding a jug.
BTW was at Rye beach yesterday. Water in low 60's like having a bath !

Honestly the CRT looks good in the pictures. Purity adjustment is miles off which is something that must be addressed before worrying about color circuits (you have to have a really good B&W picture including purity before you can have a decent color picture).
My rule is if it's acceptably bright without a brightener run it, and if it needs a brightener use it up on that brightener and look for a better tube as it slowly dies.

All the 21" roundy color tubes are interchangeable with grayscale adjustments (which have to be done when swapping CRTs anyway)....the only caveat being the metal cone 21AXP22 can't go into a newer set designed for a 21CYP, FBP/FJP/GUP/GVP22 because newer sets lack insulation in their mounting provisions. 19V roundy tubes (21" tubes relabeled because of changes in measurement laws) are also interchangeable.

Good to know. I got it in the house and fed it a good signal, the sweep looks good, good H/V linearity/lock. I'm having trouble with purity but it's been a while since I've worked on a color set. There's also weird sounds around the yoke like somebody's cooking popcorn in there, I can't see any arcing, and the vertical jumps a bit when making that sound. I may pull the yoke and inspect it for anything weird

I added pictures to the imgur gallery. Did purity setup but havent done convergence yet. color all the way down gives an ok b&w image, color mid way gives psychedelic color bars, all the way goes blurry. The color control didn't do anything before purity setup, I also tweaked the color killer threshold to see if that would wake anything up. I think cleaning all the pots is my next step. I wanna get all the low hanging fruit first.

Also sams for this one is on ETF

The barberpoling color bars picture indicates your 3.58MHz color osc is off frequency. Dirty pots (except for possibly hue) should not cause that. Sometimes if Horizontal holds is set close to the edge it can break color sync if said sync is marginal.

What's probably necessary to cure the barber pole is adjustment of the color osc coil....a bad tube or marginal osc crystal can cause it too. I'd check and maybe sub the osc tube. If that don't fix it adjust the coil, and if that doesn't have range sub the crystal and if it still won't adjust start checking passives.

We have color demod! We've probably had it all along. Questionable equipment (hdmi converter)in my TV transmitter chain caused the barber pole-ing. See imgur link for updates. I just need to dial in the purity better and do the convergence and this should make an ok picture
