The last delta gun sets made by RCA were in 1980 or 81 (solid state)
The last RCA tube type sets were made in 1974. As far as I know the last tube type Zeniths and Magnavoxes were made in 1975. I have a GE 19" tube type from 1975 and a Portacolor tube type from 1976. KC8ADU has seen a 1980 made tube type portacolor, he said in another posting that sometime he could get a picture. |

I don't remember GE making any tube sets after 1975. Zenith was all solid state by 1975 they may have had a few 4 tube chassis in early 74. I have some Conrac delta gun monitors at work that were made in 1985 the tubes were made in Japan.

We have a couple of Panasonic delta-gun monitors at work that date back to about 1997. Far as I know, Ikegami still makes delta tubes. The public station that shares our tower got a 'Gami HD monitor not long ago with deltas.

<<Are you sure those are really delta gun CRTs? A lot of CRTs use an in-line gun, but a dot screen. In fact most computer monitors are like this. I can't remember seeing a delta gun CRT made after about 1980.>>
Yeah even portacolors had inlines, what would be the point of sticking with deltas and having to worry about more complex convergence of that third gun that is not in line with the other two? |

I saw a mid 80s Midland drug store cheap-o 9" B&W that was solid state except for a 53HK7 output/damper compactron. That was probably the newest tube set I have noticed. Also saw a mid/late 70s Zenith Chromacolor 17" hybrid. That one was weird! Had the same front cabinet and knobs as the 17EC45-type sets.
To expand this thread to another question: Is there still any B&W TV made larger than 5"? I had seen 12" B&W sets at Fry's as recently as last year for $34.99, but not now. And is there still a Sony 5" Trinitron TV that is REALLY a Sony? The 5XB5, (or whatever the model # is), Color 5" CRT Watchman is NOT a real Sony. It's a Daewoo, I think. Charles |

"So, gun layout doesn't always relate to phosphor layout?
Correct. In line guns can work with shadow mask holes that are offset - but each mask hole makes an in-line RGB triplet |

I actually have two Portacolors side by side. One is from 1968 with the delta phosphor, and a 1976 one with a striped phospher layout.
Both have the same dot pitch, but the '68 one has way better resolution. The '76 one seems brighter and sharper, but cannot be viewed up close at all. I actually prefer that dot-triad phosphor layout. One thing is the striped layout makes the edges of everything look jagged. |

The Conrac monitors we have are true delta gun crt's with all the convergence adjustments that go with them. They were made in 1985 I was there when they were unboxed. We don't run them often anymore so they still put out a great picture.
