To discharge the tube I use a thin, long flatblade screw driver with an alligator clip lead to the screw driver, and the other end clipped to the chassis. I then slide the screwdriver tip under the rubber cap and touch the anode connnection for 30 seconds.
In some cases some HV will bleed off through the coating on the shell of the ttube, and even sometimes through a ground connection on the neck if it has one. Even if you don't see/hear the arc ELECTRICITY IS THERE! i learned the hard way once, and ow.... I even keep the screwdriver and leads conected while I'm pulling tubes or working around the HV cage just because I'm paranoid.

TV NUt... No, not quite the verticle line I have. However, i've noticed that the lines have moved their way closer to the edge of the screen... almost to the point to where they can't be seen. This, in a way, is a good thing... however I have no idea what occurred to make them move.
JP... yes I discharge the same way, and I too am usually paranoid and keep a clip on the leads. Before returning the anode lead to the tube again, I will usually discharge once again from the anode button to the coating... and many times get a healthy arc... so I'm glad I do that. I've already been zapped a time or two... it ain't a good feeling! However, on this set, I used to get a good discharge after turning the set off. Now, I get nothing and wonder if that's the sign of something leaking by. I've made sure that the dust is all cleaned off the bell, so I know it's not getting out that way. Oh well... the set has played for several hours today with no problems, and the verticle lines have moved to the left some. The lines really aren't a big problem while viewing... it's just that I know they shouldn't be there and that's why they annoy me.

Im not sure if its the same thing, but ive seen those lines on early 80's 19 inch RCA set once. Seemed like it was something with the tunner. They would only show up on channels 2-6 but was effected in a stange way by adjusting the brightness knob. The lines would also come and go but only on those channels, 2 3 4 at being the worst. Gook Luck!!

Figured out the verticle lines!
As I was putting everything back together tonight, I reconnected my cable/dvd/vcr sources differently since I got the Curtis Mathes back in order. After getting everything plugged back in and turned on, I noticed that the verticle lines were back again (they kinda vanished a couple of days ago and I wasn't sure why).
Come to find out, it was something that southernguy was telling me on the phone... it was my wireless signal sender causing the lines... something I forgot to check after our conversation. He said he had a similar problem with his while using it on certain sets. So, mystery solved! For now, it seems that all is working fine. Only thing I have left to do is touch up convergence a bit once I bring home my generator from the cabin this weekend.
