Buffalo NY is DuMont country lately....gots me some sets

....and both in the town of West Seneca NY!
The first I got is this RA-113, for $75, about a week and a half ago. Original owner, never moved from the house since new. Picture tube is good, and I'm about 3/4 of the way through the chassis. Now today, I saw an ad for an estate sale, and the listing said "vintage tv". Got up bright and early this morning, and everything was 50% off. And what to my wondering eyes did appear, but this RA-108! Just wish I had some reindeer to move the sucker :D. Picture tube is good, and not a scratch on it. All for the princely sum of $25 :) This 108 is HUGE. And man, is it impressive to look at.....open the doors, and the WOW factor is incredible! |
Wow! Those are two real beauties, and a good 19AP4 is a rare find in itself.
You might want to move those to the Early B&W and Projection TV section, so the more of us can drool over them. |
Good idea, I don't know why I had it in the other forum..... :)
|
Absolutely a treasure that you have found and yes when you open the doors on the big DuMonts it is incredible. You don't even need to have the set on! To think that in America someone once designed such a beautiful piece of electronic magic. I am truly envious except for the lifting, moving and space taking factors that made me part with my RA-109A years ago.
|
Wow is right! Beautiful wood and well made cabinets to go with top notch electronics, you can't find anything like it new. And all that for only $25!
|
Hey Tim wish I was that lucky to get a Dumont set hopefully at the E.T.F. 2014 convention hope to see you there...Timothy

I'm about 80% done with the RA-113 already. Fortunately, Bob's doing the same exact restoration as me, so I'm stealing tips from his thread ;)
As of right now, I'm out of parts, so it's time to place some orders for more filter caps and a couple special 10 kV caps :) |
Careful - it uses three 10kV caps
|
I just ordered the same ones you got :)

Wow, when it rains. it pours! Congratulations, those are two sweet looking DuMonts. I really enjoyed restoring my RA-113 which has a good original 17AP4. I think they are the last of the really well made DuMonts, except of the Royal Sovereign.

Here's a couple more of the RA-113, I put the chassis back in it last night while waiting on a Mouser order.
Of course, the dang flash shows every little mark...in regular light, it looks perfect :) I just have to find a couple replacement stars for the left door. Had to move it over to a temporary spot until I figure out where the heck I can put it ;) |
Ah, another "Revere." They seem to be coming out of the woodwork lately. If you need a new 6AL7 tuning indicator tube, fortunately they are cheap and plentiful (unlike a 6E5). I bought mine for $4 from vacuumtubes.net.

Outstanding!

So here's where I'm at with the RA-113.....
Recap done long ago, had to replace the candohms in the set also, which were dead. Well, all but one was, and then the third smoked on variac power-up. Anyway, long story short, I've got audio on both FM and TV. For TV, I have a raster that has almost all horizontal sweep but almost no vertical sweep....but only for the most part when it's on a signal. When it's not on a signal, it seems that the raster fades. Even when it's there, it's not that bright. Now, normally I'd go towards the resistors in the HV section (all the caps there are done, same ones Bob used in his RA-113 restoration thread), but the fact that what raster is there is coming up with a video signal has me a bit puzzled...... |
Perhaps the positive feedback that makes the vertical oscillator oscillate has failed and the synch pulse from a program is all that is exciting the vertical output...
|
Have you ohmed out the vertical blocking transformer yet?
|
Those are beautiful sets, Tim. The DuMonts are always impressive looking, and are built like tanks. No cheap plastic in those babies!

I also managed to grab this in the ETF silent auction for $20 :)
BigaudioAl is getting this one too....unless I decide I love it ;) :D |
I have NO space right now. :sigh:
She's yours!!! :thmbsp: |
"Kamakiri Television Sales & Service - If you don't have room, leave it here and trade Tim something for it after he ends up fixing it" :D
Much to my surprise, the chassis was totally recapped, and some new resistors in place. Only problem is that the 19AP4 is stone dead. Did I hear someone at ETF mention that the museum had some for sale? |
Anybody here have a WORKING Royal Sovereign ? THAT would be a site to behold.. Too bad their reach kinda exceeded their grasp..
|
The ETF did have 2 19AP4s for sale. Did. I bought one of the two and someone else purchased the other...
