Sharp VCR pinch roller help

I have this sharp VCR from the mide to late 90s. The VCR will play for few seconds but than picture starts to mess up and the tape gets damaged at the top. A came to the conclusion that pinch roller is problem and it's not hard or cracking but just very very glazed. Sharp original sold it as an assembly which is no longer made of course however I was able to get old one off and measured it with calipers. PR28 is the one that matches my measurements and the only place that has it for $2.75 but it is out of stock but I believe it's probably has been discounted. I do know someone that can rebuild pinch rollers he normally does pinch rollers for audio gear but he will do ones for VCR if you ask but it coast $70. I like this machine but no where enough for me to spend that kind of money it. Especially if might not be able get pinch roller back on it's assembly as it wasn't meant to come off. I think I can probably sand the pinch roller and that would probably fix the problem but I have never sanded a pinch roller. So what kinda of grit of sandpaper should I use and any recommendations on proper procedure on how to sand the roller so it stays even.
