Sharp VCR pinch roller help

I have this sharp VCR from the mide to late 90s. The VCR will play for few seconds but than picture starts to mess up and the tape gets damaged at the top. A came to the conclusion that pinch roller is problem and it's not hard or cracking but just very very glazed. Sharp original sold it as an assembly which is no longer made of course however I was able to get old one off and measured it with calipers. PR28 is the one that matches my measurements and the only place that has it for $2.75 but it is out of stock but I believe it's probably has been discounted. I do know someone that can rebuild pinch rollers he normally does pinch rollers for audio gear but he will do ones for VCR if you ask but it coast $70. I like this machine but no where enough for me to spend that kind of money it. Especially if might not be able get pinch roller back on it's assembly as it wasn't meant to come off. I think I can probably sand the pinch roller and that would probably fix the problem but I have never sanded a pinch roller. So what kinda of grit of sandpaper should I use and any recommendations on proper procedure on how to sand the roller so it stays even.

I tried acetone and I have been afraid to try rubber renue on pinch roller as I thought it might leave a residue that would contaminat my tapes.

Thanks I will keep that in mind but first I'm going to try to see if can fix the old by sanding with some 400 grit sandpaper. All that will have to wait until I finish moving.

Do not do that. If the rubber is still soft and not glazed, I doubt that is your problem. Check and see if the tape curling is taking place between the pinch roller and capstan. There are many other things that can cause tape damage. You have to open it up and observe the tape path.

I've used Ronson lighter fluid for glazed pinch rollers for over 25 years and have yet to find anything better. Soak a folded square of paper towel with it and turn the roller with your fingers. It cleans far superior to Alcohol and doesn't leave a residue.

I seriously doubt that this issue is due to glaze and seems more like an alignment issue between the capstan and the roller. Some machines I've ran into have had very hard pinch rollers and have played without issue.

Check that the roller is not sitting off on a angle and is running square with the capstan. Cover the IR sensors and examine it without a tape I had one that was bent a bit by someone yanking a tape out after it was ate. That machine was doing EXACTLY what yours is doing. Also look for evidence of anyone playing with the alignment. Someone could have been in there turning screws. A offset audio head will also cause problems like this.

Ronson lighter fluid contains Naphtha. Apparently this is good for cleaning rubber. I usually use alcohol or acetone for belts. Dampen a paper towel and pull it through until the black 'oxide' stops coming off. This usually yields a belt with far greater grip on the pulleys. Of course if the belt is shot, it probably won't do anything to help. I'll have to get some Ronson the next time I'm out and about. Thanks for the tip!

A little shot of pine tar will do wonders for shot belts or worn out clutches in VCR's.

Same with pine pitch. The rubber roller for the rewind in my Sony Portapac AV-3400 was not as soft as it was 50+ years ago so I thinned out some pine pitch fresh off the tree at about 1:10 with rubbing alcohol and spread a drop or so on the roller while it was running in rewind so that the liquid will spread all around the rollers. Once the alcohol dries you're left with with a nice tacky surface on the rubber that grips well, but still has a bit of slip when needed. It's close to a year and it's still rewinding like new.

When I got the VCR a cap in PSU was bad and made the VCR not play right but mechanically it was fully functional. After using for a while it just one day started acting up but is intermittent as on some tapes plays fine but others not. I cleaned the pinch but I will try Ronson lighter fluid once as what got to lose. However that will be a while as my stuff is all in boxes from moving.
