As we all know, the 16 RPM speed never caught on with the general public, but it did end up being used for "talking books" for the blind. There was also an even slower 8 RPM speed sometimes used for these "talking books." There were special record players made especially for the blind that were issued by the government for this purpose. At least one of these I've seen had what appeared to be a 'stock' 3-speed rim-drive turntable (as I recall, I think I remember thinking it looked like a V-M), but instead of the usual 33-45-75 RPM motor shaft steps, it had speeds of 8-16-33 instead.

Oh, and if you play your Chipmunks records at 16 RPM, you can prove to yourself that it's really David Seville (Ross Bagdasarian) singing all the parts.
