He just has it listed as a Vintage RCA Color TV, at least for now.
If he could pull the yoke Silver getters would probably double the price! I sent him a little note informing him on what he has and suggesting more pictures. Last edited by Eric H; 07-24-2008 at 11:21 PM. |

We'll see if the high bidder wants it as bad as I do......

Well I learned a harsh lesson here about talking up the value of a TV and saying how bad I wanted it, with that Airline mini-console from Detroit. All I did was draw attention to it for the competition. Eric might have cost the winning bidder $2000 with his advice, if the seller puts up more pics and talks now about how it's worth a fortune. If the seller's one of us, great. If the buyer's one of us (Kamakiri?), then it feels a little "Benedict Arnold". Especially when the set is "ruff" and missing parts already. It'll probably go for a lot more than it's really worth. We all "live for" making that one perfect score and finding a super-rare or super-valuable set for cheap. I'm not sure we're serving each other very well when we "spill the beans" to an uninformed seller. Nothing personal, Eric, you've done me a couple of favors and all that and we're friends. Just putting my 2c out for consideration.

... I'd be happy enough with a CTC-4 :-P
(i.e., I won't be bidding up any CT-100)

I don't see anything wrong with mentioning an auction in a forum, or contacting a seller to let them know they have something worth more than an "old piece of junk."
There are a more eyes shopping out there than you might imagine, if you only read the posts in a forum like this. Within a 5-mile radius of here, there are two different collectors who own world-class radios that make my feeble collection look like dog doody. If those guys read a forum like this at all, they are remarkably silent, but I can testify that they know how to scour eBay like hawks. eBay also includes international shoppers who may have no interest (or the language fluency) to participate in such a forum. Visitors to my website often ask questions about the value of whatever they own. Most times, it's something of little value, but if it's something more significant, I give them my honest guesstimate rather than try to steal it for a bargain price. I already have too much stuff, and life is too short to spend it trying to flip things on eBay. If you want to "call dibs" on an item so that other forum members don't compete with you, I don't have a problem with that. But there are other silent shoppers out there, from Asia to Europe, and if one of them spots the item and decides to outbid you, that'll happen, whether or not the seller understands the true value or brags it up in an auction description. Hiding something of value on ebay is almost like hiding an elephant in your kitchen. Not much escapes folks. It would have to be a really terrible description, it would seem, to avoid searches. As a test I just hopped over to the 'bay and did one of the searches I do from time to time; I think it was "RCA color" which got me the CT-100 and a couple roundies that have also been discussed here. Sometimes stuff does sneak through, for one reason or another. The only tv I ever bought on ebay is a CTC-12 that I got for 99 cents. I don't know why I was the only bidder; I had no trouble finding it listed. Sometimes the stars just line up.

Ok, I admit I hyperreacted. I'm the current high bidder and it seemed briefly like it might go unnoticed. I've won several very nice items for dirt because I'm pretty thorough about my searches. When I started on eBay in 1999 I used to find great deals all the time. A nice Regency TR-1 radio for 50 bucks because it was listed as "box of broken radios" -- with a Zenith Royal 500H and a couple of nice Westinghouse and RCA radios to boot. It's a lot harder now & I'll agree that ebay is being watched like a hawk now. But 2 weeks ago I got a Capehart shortwave radio that routinely gets $200 for only 20 bucks because apparently everybody else was asleep that day. So it does still happen. I had hopes for the CT-100, but probably unrealistic ones. Kamakiri, good luck, you'll probably outbid me. Much more convenient for you in NY than me in IN to pick it up -- that's my limiting factor, else price would be no object...

It looks like my message, (and maybe others) prompted him to add some pictures of the chassis.
Not sure if that really helps the value or hurts it in this case, the set is pretty ratty inside though it does have the resistor cover that someone needed and the yoke cover looks pristine! |

Hey, I DID NOT mean to start a big argument here...If I hadn't posted this, I feel sure someone else would have...I HOPE it's "One of Us" who gets it.. I know this sounds snotty & arrogant, but I kinda feel that most people outside of our little fraternity DON'T DESERVE having treasures like this...They're "Not Worthy"...It shouldn't go to some money-grubber who is just going to "flip it" & try to make a buck on it...It OUGHTA go to one of US, who'll love it, & painstakingly restore it (hopefully) to glory...I'm Sick, ain't I ?!? (grin)
