Why Did I Buy It? What Was I Thinking?
I just picked this RCA 9T240 TV.
The cabinet is not great. The chassis is missing the cage, most tubes, and has rust. Missing all knobs and channel indicator piece. I haven't looked under the chassis yet. I tested the CRT with my B&K CRT tester and it tests good. For $20.00 at least I got a CRT (hopefully it works in reality). Last edited by jonboy55; 03-18-2009 at 03:33 PM. |

$20 for a good 10BP4? I'd feel really good about that!

I buy sets like that (under $25) all the time at local auctions. Pull the CRT and maybe the knobs, and leave the carcass there.
It's been a good way to stockpile CRT's cheap. Chuck

That's a good deal at $20. And it's good to save it from the trash, as they're only getting more rare day by day. If you have a safe place to keep it, stick it away and forget it... Pull it out in 10 years, and you'll be VERY happy you saved it!

$20? A good CRT? Good Deal.
Survey it for Parts, and dump the carcass. Cruel, but Logical; LJB

I think its unfortunate that some people buy these sets cheap, and then take the CRT and other parts and dump the remains. It was said earlier that these sets are getting rarer each day. As collectors, I feel the best thing to do would be to take the whole TV and store it. I'm certain that some of these TVs just need a little help, and they could be restored. But to just take any old inexpensive TV that may have some hope of repair and rip parts out of it is just a needless waste. You may want to work on one of these sets later, maybe in a few years. Or you may run into someone else later that wants one of those sets that got torn apart. Granted, there's a lot of junky sets out there, and storage space is also an issue, but I feel its best to save them intact if at all possible, whether one considers them worthless, basket cases, or whatever. They are not making parts for them any more. I try to do that whenever I run into a set like this. Just my opinion.

I really haven't decided what I'm doing with the TV.
If I was to "part it out" I would separately sell the tube, the chassis, and the cabinet. I wouldn't pick parts off the chassis. Also, I don't feel bad about having a junker chassis and buying another junker chassis and putting them together to make one working chassis. Sometimes a chassis is just too messed up. This specific chassis seems to have had a lot of "action" in the HV cage which will always make worry about the reality of saving the chassis. Also the mask is very messed up in the cabinet. Right now it's sitting in the basement and not going anywhere. It's just too heavy to carry up the stairs!! |

jonboy55-
I have an RCA 9T243 that I have not tested, so I may get in contact with you if I need some unusual part. My set is complete and its cabinet is in pretty good condition. Speaking of keeping old TVs versus just parts, I have an RCA 8T241 that I got in 1980 from the basement of my first apartment. I have still never done anything with it, but I recently looked at it and noticed its cabinet is really rotted along its back and bottom area, so it may ultimately be only good for parts. That first apartment, by the way, is available now for rent. They have totally remodeled the building, it looks like: http://www.atproperties.com/listing/7106557 Picture #4 shows what appears to now be the master bedroom. That was the formal dining room when my brother and I lived there and we called it the "tube room". We had bought about 10,000 old tubes from a surplus store in Chicago where I worked that closed down, and we had all the sorted and boxed tubes on shelves on one whole wall of that room. I did all of my early repair work in that room as well.

It's not really a matter of "what was I thinking?" But more the matter of "I just happened to be there at the right time, and "accidentally" sealed the deal!"
Ask me how I know this..... Oh Brudduh!
