one-day auction - 1948 Dumont Savoy RA-103

If you are near Rockledge, FL then you might pick this one up cheap since it was listed today and ends tomorrow.

I'm trying to find out from the owner what the shipping costs would be. They have contacted me once, but, no figures, yet.
It all depends on costs to my house.
Looks like it's worth saving, though.

Turns out, I AM near Rockledge Fl, maybe 10-12 miles up the road. And, as the seller said he would deliver it (I don't drive), I bought it! Don't really have room for it, but for that price, not much downside!

You can never have too many DuMonts John. I've seen the literature sell for more.

Congratulations on getting that one. I like the looks -- vaguely robot-like!

John,

You make me feel better. I picked up one of those many years ago. I paid $26.85 less than you did, but I had to drive halfway out Long Island to pick it up and I've always wondered what's wrong with me that I like these huge old consoles!

I will post a few photos when it shows up. Ultimately, I don't know what will be done with it. I don't really want to refinish the cabinet (too many other projects in the queue), but as it was so close by, seemed only right to save it.

I agree nice save! I never get the chance to find stuff like that in Colorado. Dumonts are by far my favorite old tv to restore. I have several table top models up and running. They have been by and far the most reliable vintage sets I have, heavy and built like a tank!

Photos of the DuMont

The DuMont arrived, and well, it is pretty scruffy. CRT had no emission, but I ran the filament voltage up on the Belron, and gave it one brief shot with the rejuvenation setting, and now it has OK emission. Only a few seconds of life test (10 seconds is nominal). So it would likely give a viewable picture, but not much life left. It appears to be an original 12JP4, though it is unmarked. I cleaned the black gunk from the face of the CRT. The rubber pad under the CRT mounting strap had melted and then turned rock hard. Chassis is a bit rusty. Underneath it appears to have had some work done over the years. Cabinet is rough, with no finish to speak of on the outside, and several veneer chips and assorted scratches. Brought it up slowly on the variac, just for fun. AM radio works (!), TV does nothing. TV AC interlock is damaged, had to clip lead the AC power. Phonograph does not operate.

If our esteemed member Mr. Cahill can arrange to come and pick it up in a timely manner, I am going to let it go live with him. I already have too much stuff!

I'm hoping I'm picking it up from John tommorrow afternoon.
He told me last night that he got tubes in tv to light, and, had some B+.
That's encouraging.
I'm gonna like this set....
I have restored a cople 3 Dumonts, and, haven't been dissappointed.
