Another CTC-10 Montecello! (in Philly this time)

no affiliation

He said he needs pickup by next week, and it's already next week. Just in case the ad goes down, the phone number is 215-253-6929.

I wasn't quite sure if I should post this here...or on the thread I placed earlier last week?? I figured this would be the best place for it.

The above mentioned CTC-10 Montecello is not a CTC -10 or a Montecello, but rather it's a CTC-11 and I don't know what model name it was given? But as was mentioned, it was in Philly. I had checked in with the experts here at VK last week about this set, and I picked it up yesterday and brought it home to NJ.

The set is in excellent condition both inside and out. It was owned by a local Philly Doctor by the name of Heller. There's a repair tag inside dated 1965. The CRT appears to be original, and is in excellent condition. After a delayed wake up, it almost pinned the needles on my tester.

The only flaw I have been able to find so far is a crack in the plastic tuning knob. I'm hoping to find a replacement for it. I decided to go for broke and brought the set up on my Variac. After several minutes of slowly increasing the voltage, I started to hear some activity in the high voltage section and then we had raster on the screen. I ran it for several minutes and saw and heard no problems, everything seemed stable and correct.

Although I didn't run a signal into it, the brightness level seemed normal, and all functions seemed to be fine. The only real issue will be dealing with the cataract on the face of the crt. I think I'm going to try Bryan Gadow's method of dunking it in a tank of water for several days/weeks to loosen the mask.

All in all...I'd say it wasn't a bad deal for $75.00.

Bob.

An excellent deal for $75.

If you find two of those big knobs, I'm also looking for one. Mine is a little newer (a NOS replacement). Only a fussbudget would notice the difference, but correct always beats purty close.

If you happen to pull off the fine tuning knob, I'd be curious to see a photo. Same deal there. Mine works and doesn't look bad, but it's not quite right.

Glad to see that the "New Vista" uses a "nuvistor" in the tuner

My CTC-10 has that same VHF tuner knob. I need one, as mine is cracked where it fits over the tuner shaft. Since my set came with no knobs, it matters not if it is slightly different. My knobs all came from an 11 anyway.

Is there a difference between the 10 and the 11, other than tuner, and CRT choice?

Living room square footage must have been cheap (and plentiful) back then. This cabinet is very similar in design and probably size as well to the Monticello I picked up last week. Apparently this tuning knob is a high failure part as mine is cracked where it fits over the tuner shaft too. A loose fit but it does the job for now.

I read with interest the reference to “waking up” the CRT. Is there a thread covering this subject? I would like to know more about the process.

Operating a CRT filament at rated voltage for extended periods (days at a time) will sometimes bring a 'sleepy' CRT back to full emissions, which is what I usually try before heading into the cleaning or rejuvination modes on testers. The theory is the cathodes lose some emissive capability after not being operated for a few decades, so getting the cathodes good and hot for a while will sometimes bring a seemingly dead tube back to life. Regular use typically makes them better with time as well, though it's a 50/50 shot. Seems to me most tubes from that time were ran into the ground though, I have 3 duds in my bedroom right now that won't come back no matter how many times I rejuve them. Shame too, a 21CYP22A I have has perfect emission on 2 guns, but blue is totally defunct.

The model # pictured in the photo: 212 G 949 MV
is called "The Blenheim". The remote version of this model is "The Dubois".

What causes the discoloration around the perimeter of the screen like that?

Deterioration of the PVA material used to attach the lens to the front of the tube.
