Would this be good for a beginner?
I'm going up to Missouri for a few weeks soon and wanted to get a tv to work on with my grandpa and give to him. What do you guys think about this set? It's 40.00 and looks to be complete except for the one wrong knob on the front. And if anyone can read what the brand is on it could you please say i cant make it out at all i want to say it says admiral but im not shure

Hello there are some sets that are easier to work on and there are harder ones always start by replacing caps and electrolytics first and then you should be on your way but always prepare to have bad transformers or crts a week crt some times can be recharged depending on how dead it is....Timothy

I can't say what that is but its the right age. I had the easiest time getting mid-50's sets working again because they may have originally been stored away because something simple quit, then they went shopping, possibly for a new C O L O R tv
Like above, replacing electros first will get the set powered up and it would then show other issues, if any exist, before the paper caps begin to fail after a bit of operation. At least with paper caps, they usually just keep things from working right rather than frying other stuff |

First one may be an Emerson from around 1952 or 53. The bigger ones are a Philco and an RCA, both from around 1950 or 51.

That RCA console, the one on the right in the bottom photo, will be a good performer if the CRT and fly are good.

That Emerson would be a nice set, too.

I hope that the tubes and flys are good in all of em. I plan on going through each one slowly and methodicly one at a time so that way I hopefully will not have to go back through them again.
![]() P.S. I am looking for a CRT checker to take with me if any one wants to sell one or let me borrow one. Last edited by josephdaniel; 12-08-2012 at 08:55 PM. |
