That would've been me in 1955 but I think I had enough sense to solder stuff back in my workshop and not on the rug. How many kids today know how to make things, take things apart and fix them and put them back together? So much is throwaway and it's easy to get instant gratification with cheap cheap electronics. A lot of us gathered old chassis for parts and made our radios and such. What a feeling to hear the first squeals of regeneration and know that it was going to work! I know what you mean about lawnmowers, too: I kept one running fine until the chassis no longer cast a shadow!

At least the kid (first picture) seems to be keeping one hand in his pocket
while probing the chassis...

Hi All;
I think it would have been me in the first picture, only it would have been me doing both things, at the bench..
THANK YOU Marty

And here we see little Johnny pee himself when the probe he's holding hits a live 400V lead.

Two of my cats are always walking on the workbench. I have to keep an eye on them, when I use the soldering irons.
I use my Weller, when working on the old sets, as it cools immediately.

Back then, 30 cents would also get you a hamburger, or a gallon and half of gas.
