Wow Bob, that's one impressive project that you've taken on there. It's clear to me that you take your TV collecting hobby a bit more seriously than myself. I can only imagine what that addition will do to the value of your property. Very interesting indeed.

Here's an update on how the chassis cleanup is coming along. I've managed to get the bulk of the mouse poo and rust off the chassis.

Chassis as found.

Lower level chassis as found.

Lower chassis cross brace area that was very rusty.

I avoided using any aggressive cleaning solution in the high voltage cage area. For that I thoroughly flushed everything with denatured alcohol. I don't think the mice had found an opening into that area.

Lots of detailing yet to be done around the tuner area. I'd like to pull the tuner out in order to better clean it, but I may let that go until at least the set becomes somewhat operational.

There wasn't too much cleaning needed on the underside of the chassis, but you can see where my cleaning solution has run down from above and turned the cadmium plating a powdery white. I don't have a good place to thoroughly hose down these kinds of projects during the dead of winter, so I'm using a spray bottle filled with water to clean up the messy cleaning residue. For sure it's not an ideal situation. Now I'll need to backtrack and attempt to clean that white powder from the bottom side of the chassis. There's no easy solution to cleaning up behind mice.

Kevin, that is looking really good. What kind of cleaner did you use? I have a chassis in somewhat similar condition that I would like to get looking that good.

Thanks. I had this stuff that I bought at Menards for cleaning stains from the toilet and sink, so I thought I'd see how it worked on mouse poo.
Turns out it cleans mouse and rust off without striping the cad plating off too fast. It really helps if you keep it moving on the surface by scrubbing with a small short bristle brush, otherwise if you let it run down vertical surfaces and leave it to long it leaves streaks. Applying more and rinsing seems to remove the streaks. It really needs to be hosed off good, but I don't have a good indoor area for that operation. In some badly rusted area's I probably used 6-12 applications. Slow painful process.

I tried some Permatex rust dissolver in a couple places and found it eats the cad plating off way to fast when I covered too large a area. Also tends to darken the metal after clean up. The CLR actually appears to work as a Cadmium brightener, provided you flush it off well with clean water. I used it straight from the bottle. Takes very little solution and lots of time.

Thank's, Kevin. It just so happens I have some CLR under the sink and will give it a try.

That set is awesome! I have never seen an actual example of one of those and I've been into vintage TV's for many years. The odd a-symetrical design gives it a real early unique look. It looks like you have a real nice collection there!
