heres a picture of it on and playing my sega genesis the picture is quite good, it took me a while to get the adjustments right but i have no complaints. i think the sound from it blows any tv ive ever heard out of the water

Charlie, you're close on the chassis number--it's KCS-136B. VHF only, as I found out when I zoomed in on the pic of the front control panel. I want to say that the "New Vista" badge below the volume control is a knockout plug covering a hole for an optional UHF tuner, and it likely is, since the VHF tuner has the UHF position between channels 2 and 13.

That this TV is VHF only probably dates it before 1964. Many TVs made in the early '60s had knockout plugs covering the UHF tuner hole, as the tuner was available as an extra-cost option even before '64 (for areas with only UHF TV stations, like Fort Wayne, Indiana, Youngstown, Ohio, et al).

The set is a late '61, early '62 model.
When the set came factory-equipped with UHF, it had a regular one tube UHF tuner and a VHF tuner with a UHF IF input.
If the set was shipped without UHF, a rather elaborate three tube UHF tuner kit had to be installed. It had a separate IF strip, that fed the UHF tuner to the TV IF, instead of going through the VHF tuner. Seemed to work very well. It was also used in color sets.

kinda hard to judge with the video game... almost looks like the fine tuner needs adjustment (but that's likely the poor image quality I am looking at on the ship's PC right now). It does appear that you have good brightness and contrast! That's a good thing!

the quality is ok, but its hard to adjust.. all the adjustment knobs are so touchy and sensitive. ill hook it up to the converter box later and take a new picture. ive been eye balling a beautiful 1952 Arvin console at a local flea market. they want 115 for it and wont go any lower. the cabinet is beautiful and everything intact. it even has the original rabbit ears in the back still in plastic. should i go for it and buy?

Touchy adjustments can be due to dirty pots or old capactitors. In your case, likely due to both.

The Arvin sounds nice. You really wont know what kind of deal you got until you get it home and learn the condition of the CRT. If the crt needs replacing, will it be easy to get one? Some are and some are not. It's a gamble. If you can peak in the back and see a CRT booster in there, then you know the tube is no good. If I thought I could get a replacement easily, if the set was in nice cosmetic conditon and I really liked it, I would give 115 for it. Others might not.
