i meant the effect is like a bad crt,not that you have a bad crt.i remember those magnavoxs having a lack of contrast and brightness caused by a ceramic resistor near the service switch.saw a couple of crts replaced because of this issue.good luck

well i will tell you this maggie had the crt replaced in i think it was 1982 but it was because something fell behind it like a big mirror people would hang above an old set and it hit the protective cover in the back and broke the neck. ill keep that resistor in mind, thanks

Be sure to check the caps around the video output tube. Seems there was a coupling cap that could cause this problem.

i did notice that i had replaced the videooutput tube thinking that was the problem but i had put a new one in when i got the set and from the start the brightness was not what it should be so months later with very little hours using it i decided to change that tube i tested it and it was completly dead. i had put another in but didnt help the brightness at all and i have not checked the second one i put in to see if that one went bad. could there be a problem somewhere that will damage the video tube to show just about zero on the tester. all the tubes were checked prior to putting them in or maybe that tube was not good in some way.
