Power Rectifier diodes needed

they are for the admiral ctc-12 clone , measured current .48A , Mallory 1N2070 or 1N3194 (VB600) or RCA 1N2884 or 1N3195

Would radio shack have suitable rectifiers or where would I go ?

mike

Radio shack should have suitable replacements...Not of those numbers though.
You want to find the data sheet for the original or compatible types to find the peak reverse voltage rating as when selecting a replacement that is an important speck.
Look for one with the same or higher forward higher current and peak inverse(reverse) voltage specks as a replacements.

BTW if the originals are selenium and not silicon like I'm assuming then you also should need a series dropping resistor to compensate for the lower forward voltage drop.

Use 1N4007. They cost only a few cents each and I recommend buying 100 or so, as they come in handy many a time. Rated 1.0 A and 1000 V.

ok i will use 1n4007 or maybe 1n4006 might work ? I thought those big rectifiers shack has rated at atleast 1000 volts would work.

they are silicon, the metal top hat type, I will explain in my thread on the set what happened , the stripe on the new one like 1n4007 represents the plus side or am I up too late to remember ?

You have it right. The stripe is the cathode, and becomes positive in rectifier usage.

The top hat variety is obsolete. The 1N4006 may work but the price difference to a 1N4007 is inconsequential. In higher voltage situations two in series will do the job.

Just make sure the PIV rating is high enough for use in the set, PIV being the maximum reverse voltage applied to the diode. The top hat ones in my CTC-4 are rated 600 PIV, more than enough for the service they are in. I have seen people use general purpose diodes in the doubler circuit on sets, but it makes me nervous.
