Are you talking about the smears in the video you linked in post #322 (Lost in Space)?

That kind of long smear is not likely from peaking coils. In fact, it doesn't seem to occur uniformly on all parts of the picture, but looks more like a regeneration/oscillation problem. You may want to take an insulated screwdriver and touch various tube pins in the video, IF, and tuner, to see if there's a spot that's sensitive to some extra stray capacitance. Touch the CRT cathode and grid too, to see if they are radiating back into the set.
