As a general rule, RC crystals do not go bad, and should be considered as reliable as disc caps, as they are made in very much the same way, that's not saying that they can't be damaged, or contaminated or corrupted in one way or another, but it's more likely that something changed someplace causing the old one not to work right anymore, the wrong colors with the new could be a sign of this.
