If you look at RCA circuits at the time the 16" round CRTs showed up, they also used two 6BG6s and 1B3's. The thought must have been they were pushing the single output setup too hard while scanning that larger CRT. As flyback transformers improved in efficiency they went back to a single horizontal output. And soon after there were stronger horizontal output tubes.
