I assume there is 5,000 VAC or more across that resistor.

Standard resistor voltage ratings are as follows
1/2W = 350v
1W = 500v
2W = 750V

5 normal resistors is not enough voltage rating.
I suggest using Vishay VR68 resistors. 10,000 volt rated 1W.
