That doesn't seem excessive considering I have seen power transformers run quite a bit warmer. If the motor was defective, shorted turns and such it will usually have a loud hum and will be slow or not turn at all.
Check that everything in the drive is running freely and not putting an excessive load on the motor otherwise I would say it's fine. It's nice to see someone else working on eiaj tape machines. I have a Sony Portapak AV-3400.
