Do you know if the parts are still available? Is it for an old round tube B&W set? Does it mention how big the color wheel is?

Are these the magazine articles from about 1955, or more complete plans?

These plans are possibly from 1955, not overly complicated. Biggest part making color wheel. All or most parts easily available. I may start on chassis then work on wheel. The colorwheel needs to be probaly 2.5 to 3 times bigger than screen size. A big wheel cAN BE DONE, JUST MORE powerful motor. are these homebrew wheels usually housed in something for safetty?? I've seen one color wheel at museum on East coast, I think it was a factory unit.

Yes, these are for b/w american sets to convert to NTSC color format using a color wheel. nyone interested--let me know and post results..

just think about it, 1947 12" color tv(using a restored post war set).

I built a color wheel set using the Colordaptor plan from the 1955 or 1956 article in Radio and Television News. I used a ten inch tube and the wheel is 22 inches in diameter. There where pictures of it on another post but they got erased when the server went down some time ago. I never had the time to get it to work but hopefully soon will have some time to get back to it.

How about making a headband that has a small color wheel mounted in front, with associated circuitry, that is synced with the switching circuitry added to the tv via infrared? You would definitely be the toast of the neighborhood... plus you could even do it with one of those 30-inch Dumonts! Would be possible now since the electronics could be tiny, stepper motor, infrared etc. Heh then family members would be fighting over the head unit! And the tv would look normal, without a big wheel in front of it.

Frenchy:

Good idea but they already made something similar to that. It was a personal viewer that could be used with a B+W tv of any size, even the DuMont. There is a picture of one on Steve's site. It worked on the CBS system.

Wow that's neat, too big for a head though, somebody should shrink that sucker down. Could just do it with wires for simplicity and leave out the infrared.

New LCD "wheel" with magnifier

I always wondered how hard it would be to use a color LCD screen , would this display swith red. blue, green fast enough to mimick a color wheel?? A lot of space can be save over a wheel. Has anyone done this using surplus LCD color screen using solid state circiutry. It's only a matter in a few years before the really large color LCDs-- 15-17" for notebooks become available as surplus. Circuits for color can be put in small wood box, matching cabinet color of TV and LCD screen can be framed in wood to match TV case too. Since circuit wood case and lcd frame wood can be stained to match TV case closely, would lookas though part of TV. LCD screen wood frame could be shaped to give give proper round screen masking, a fresnell maginifier can be put in front of lcd and housed in same box for a clean appearance.

Has anyone attempted this???

If the LCD has red green and blue pixels, the switching speed is irrelevant - just feed in red, then green, then blue pictures in sequence, and who cares - in fact, if the response is slow, it would help reduce flicker.
