sold a vcr on CL a week later buyer wants a refund

sold a vcr on CL

buyer messages me today at 10:00 at at night
saying this thing is a piece of F'n Junk
it won't rewind and ate one of my tapes
i hope i don't ever see you
wait until i catch you somewhere
you screwed me intentionally
you better have my money.

i replied back and said it was working when you bought it
i said no need to talk to me that way
and he seen it working was hooked to a tv and i showed him FF & Rew & ejecting a tape.

i would have had no problem giving his money back if he went about it in a different way but using threats saying i screwed him i don't even want the guy around me or at my house again.

It's stuff like this which is why I'm not allowed to have people I don't know buy stuff at the house anymore...

Out here you can get a VCR at most thrift stores for $5-10 and until covid Goodwill would let you return it within a week if anything was wrong...With VCRs that cheap if anyone gets but hurt over a failure they're a petty asshole or they paid more than they needed to for one.

He saw it working.
No refunds or warranty.
"Have a nice day. "

Then just ignore further emails because you already closed the transaction.

Situations like this are why I would never conduct business like that at my house. Always in public.

Ah yes, that type of customer. File a police report, no excuses. He threatened you, period. If he attempts to contact you again, do not respond.

Only way to deal with assholes like this. They think you owe them the world for a measly $10. I loathe people like that. He got what he paid for, fair and square. It's not your fault he's too stupid to know that damn near every vcr is going to have problems operating being this old.

Its unbelievable how some people think an electro-mechanical
device 30 yrs old can be guarantied at all. Pure stupidity.
Next time have a bill of sale with "as is for parts only" & have them
sign it. If they dont, show them the egress.

On old dried up junker sets we would often beg them not to fix it.
If they insisted we would have them sign a paper that basically
said " warranty ONLY on parts replaced " then some legal sounding
crap. Half of them quickly changed there mind.

I was thinking that too. In the biz we called them rentals. Camcorders
would fly out the doors in Dec & the summer months. A few weeks to
a month later half would be returned for credit. I remember one cat that
I sold a camcorder to. I asked him if he wanted an extended warranty.
He looked me & said " no thanks, I am returning it in two weeks after
our trip to Disney World"

A long time ago when I was in college, I worked at a "big box" store and we'd have that happen with big screen TVs before & after the Super Bowl.

Much ado over a $10 VCR..... It's not like your selling one of those Panasonic AG-1980s, or Mitsu HS-U80s, asking a lot of $$$ only for it to be defective.....

It sounds like the guy is scamming you or trying to extort you, best get the Five-O involved

That is why I meet interested buyers at the local police station. Then all the guy has is your phone number and not your address. They let me plug in items in the lobby so that its operation can be verified.
