Curtis Mathes radio--kit?

I have an old Curtis Mathes radio that belonged to my grandfather. I was told he assembled it from a kit. Remains of a card taped to the back identify it as model #3618A, and date it 1958. Sound is awesome, with a little scratchiness in the controls. Can anybody tell me anything about this sweet old radio?
