I believe the safety glass must be removed when rebuilding, as the bonding material would not survive the oven temperature.

IIRC, the rebuilt tube I bought from Scotty had no safety glass, but that was OK as I was using it in the CTC-5 until I could get a 21AX. Then when I got the 21AX, Doug helped remove the glass from a dud glass tube with a cataract and put it on the rebuilt tube.

I don't recall any strong smell on the Zenith tube that Doug did for me.
